Not everyone enjoys the Xmas party as much as these two

12 Aug 2024

Each year, businesses invest a considerable amount of money in hosting end-of-year Christmas parties for their staff. However, many companies don't fully consider the reasons behind these celebrations. Are these parties truly benefiting the business, or are they for the staff?

The costs of these events can be significant, often ranging from $100 to $200 per person, and sometimes even more. Despite the substantial investment, the traditional office Christmas party often revolves around alcohol consumption, which doesn’t appeal to everyone. This dynamic tends to disproportionately reward those who enjoy drinking, while leaving non-drinkers feeling marginalised or less included.

Our research suggests that if employees were given the option to either attend the Christmas party or receive the equivalent amount of money to celebrate the end of the year in a way that suits them, more than half would choose the money. This insight highlights a disconnect between the traditional way businesses celebrate and the diverse preferences of their workforce.

In light of this, it's crucial for companies to rethink their approach to end-of-year celebrations. A one-size-fits-all party may no longer be the best way to acknowledge the hard work of a diverse team.

This doesn’t mean that company-wide celebrations should be abolished. On the contrary, these events play a vital role in fostering team spirit and unity. However, they need to be reimagined in a way that is inclusive and fair, ensuring that all employees feel valued and appreciated, regardless of their personal preferences. By doing so, companies can create a more positive and inclusive workplace culture that truly resonates with their entire team.
